Historic Shop of Ferrara — 2024

Our story

A family tradition since 1929.

La Bottega del Formaggio was founded in 1929 by Luigi Burani, at Piazzetta Berveglieri 19 — today Piazza del Municipio. The very first retail licence, no. 2641 of 8 August 1929, was issued in Luigi's name. The shop later moved to the adjacent premises behind it, at Via Cortevecchia 18, where the people of Ferrara still come in to choose their cheese.

After Luigi, from 1970 the shop was carried on by his son Giorgio together with Cilloni Luigia, and later by his wife Anna and his son Michele. Since 2001 the activity has been run by La Bottega del Formaggio di Villa L. & Scabbia G. s.n.c., keeping the same artisan way of working over time.

Parmigiano Reggiano is still hand-cut here with the traditional drop-shaped knife, as recognised by the Consortium that protects its D.O.P. — unlike most retailers, who break the wheels by machine and pre-pack the portions in vacuum bags.
